I am constantly wondering what punishment is like in the American army. All I can think of is what I see in movies: standing still in the rain all night long; pushups in the rain all night long; stacking sandbags in the rain all night long; anything in the rain all night long, actually.
We have it easy in the Israeli army. What is our punishment like? Well, it can suck, but in general it's funny stuff. Take this picture, for example. Here's a guy who had to do guard duty with his combat vest, personal bag, and army kit bag on his back, three uncomfortable pieces of equipment that are not meant to be worn like this.
It's really not so bad in the IDF! How could they act like they do in the American army when this army, the Israeli army, is a mandatory service? It just wouldn't work.

Ha, good one. I remember once in the Sinai having to walk around all day on Shabbat with a backpack with 500 MAG bullets and all my other combat gear in the hot sun while everyone was resting. However, mine wasn't so bad, a friend had to climb the highest peak in the area with all his gear (tent, kitbag etc) and stay there all day.
Its true that the punishments are not so bad in the volunteer fighting units, its a bit tougher in the tank corps. Thing is, unlike the American army, humiliating or degrading punishments are not allowed.
Sharon here...mother of 19 year old religious girl in her "tironut" got a call from her sister (who is on the same base) that daughter # 1 let her gun out of her sight for several minutes...this is thier first week of basic training...how bad will the punishment be? It seems she had to wrtie a report but we don't know any details of what happended...I am of course her mother and very anxious for her...please reply...
sharon - my first bit of advice is to not get too involved with your child's army service. You'll really being worrying about something totally out of your hands.
But really, forgetting your gun happens. At least for us, its Shabbat on base. Pretty bad punishment really, but nothing serious.
In short, she's not going to be flogged or thrown into gaza.
Where is he doing guard duty? In a mall? Don't tell me that is your barracks? What softies!
Who knows where to download XRumer 5.0 Palladium?
Help, please. All recommend this program to effectively advertise on the Internet, this is the best program!
Based on reading your blog for the past couple of hours, US Army punishments are very similar to the IDF. You may have a misconception on the US Army vis a vis what you've seen in Full Metal Jacket, which is actually a film on the US Marine Corps.
